Markus Schmid becomes the new academic director of the FSI

Markus Schmid becomes academic director of the FSI-HSG. He is Full Professor of Corporate Finance at the HSG and Director at the Swiss Institute of Banking and Finance. He will succeed the current academic director Prof. Dr. Manuel Ammann on February 1, 2024, who will serve as the future Rector of the University of St.Gallen (HSG).

Markus Schmid studied economics with a focus on corporate finance, financial market theory and international economic relations at the University of Basel, where he also received his PhD in 2004 with a dissertation on managerial compensation and corporate governance. After a research year at the Leonard N. Stern School of Business at New York University and a one-year senior assistant at the Institute of Financial Market Theory at the University of Basel, he was assistant professor at the Swiss Institute of Banking and Finance at the University of St.Gallen from 2006 to 2010, where he also habilitated in spring 2010. Prior to his election as full professor for corporate finance at the University of St.Gallen, he held the endowed professorship for corporate governance at the University of Mannheim.

His academic interests lie in the areas of empirical corporate finance, corporate governance and household finance. His work has been published in Review of Financial Studies, Journal of Financial Economics, Review of Finance, Management Science, Journal of Financial Intermediation and Journal of Banking and Finance, among others. From 2010 to 2012 he was Co-Editor and since 2012 Managing Editor of the journal Financial Markets and Portfolio Management. Read more
